I. The Head of Their Families (6:13-27)

>1. What was Moses and Aaron commanded to do? (13)

* Exodus 6:13 "Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron about the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he commanded them to bring the Israelites out of Egypt."

*

*

*

*

*

>How is this emphasized? (26-27)

* Exodus 6:26-27 "It was this same Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said, "Bring the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions." They were the ones who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing the Israelites out of Egypt. It was the same Moses and Aaron."

*

*

*

*

*

>2. How many of the tribes of Israel are mentioned in this passage? (14-16)

* Exodus 6:14-16 "These were the heads of their families: The sons of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel were Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. These were the clans of Reuben. The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. These were the clans of Simeon. These were the names of the sons of Levi according to their records: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. Levi lived 137 years."

*

*

*

*

*

>Why only these?

* These are the first three of the twelve sons of Israel (Jacob). Only one of these three is traced to the time of the Exodus, the line of Levi. Obviously the focus is where Moses and Aaron came from, who they are descendants of.

*

*

*

*

*

>Where was Moses and Aaron in the family tree of Israel? (16-25)

* Exodus 6:16-25 "These were the names of the sons of Levi according to their records: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. Levi lived 137 years. The sons of Gershon, by clans, were Libni and Shimei. The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. Kohath lived 133 years. The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. These were the clans of Levi according to their records. Amram married his father's sister Jochebed, who bore him Aaron and Moses. Amram lived 137 years. The sons of Izhar were Korah, Nepheg and Zicri. The sons of Uzziel were Mishael, Elzaphan and Sithri. Aaron married Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab and sister of Nahshon, and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. The sons of Korah were Assir, Elkanah and Abiasaph. These were the Korahite clans. Eleazar son of Aaron married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she bore him Phinehas. These were the heads of the Levite families, clan by clan."

*

*

*

*

*

>What is unusual about this? (Num. 3:11-13)

* Numbers 3:11-13 "The LORD also said to Moses, "I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine, for all the firstborn are mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether man or animal. They are to be mine. I am the LORD."

*

*

*

*

*

>Why did the Lord do this? (Gen. 49:3-7; Jos. 19:1, 13:33)

* Genesis 49:3-7 "Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power. Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father's bed, onto my couch and defiled it. Simeon and Levi are brothers-- their swords are weapons of violence. Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased. Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel."

* Joshua 19:1 "The second lot came out for the tribe of Simeon, clan by clan. Their inheritance lay within the territory of Judah."

* Joshua 13:33 "But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance; the LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he promised them."

*

*

*

But Moses said to the LORD, "Since I speak with faltering lips, why would Pharaoh listen to me?" Then the LORD said to Moses, "See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet."

* "I will make you like Pharaoh"

*

*

>And "your brother Aaron will be your prophet"?

* "your brother Aaron will be your prophet"

*

*

*

*

*

>4. What is the nature of Moses' leadership? (2)

* Exodus 7:2 "You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country."

* 2 Corinthians 5:7 "We live by faith, not by sight."

*

*

*

>6. What was the Lord's second work through Moses? (4b)

We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard of it, our hearts melted and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below."

* Exodus 7:6-7 "Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD commanded them. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh."

*

*

*

*

*

*

*

*

* Mark 8:11-12 "The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. He sighed deeply and said, "Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it."

*

*

*

>What enables a person to come to the Lord Jesus? (John 6:35-40)

* John 6:35-40 "Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."

* Exodus 7:10-11 "So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts:"
