I. Saul's Descendants (8:1-40)

>1. Who was Saul? (33-40) How did he become king of Israel? (1 Samuel 9-11) Why would this be important to the Jews who returned from exile in Babylon?

* "Ner was the father of Kish, Kish the father of Saul, and Saul the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab and Esh-Baal. 34 The son of Jonathan: Merib-Baal, who was the father of Micah. 35 The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tarea and Ahaz. 36 Ahaz was the father of Jehoaddah, Jehoaddah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth and Zimri, and Zimri was the father of Moza. 37 Moza was the father of Binea; Raphah was his son, Eleasah his son and Azel his son. 38 Azel had six sons, and these were their names: Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel. 39 The sons of his brother Eshek: Ulam his firstborn, Jeush the second son and Eliphelet the third. 40 The sons of Ulam were brave warriors who could handle the bow. They had many sons and grandsons--150 in all. All these were the descendants of Benjamin." (33-40)

* Saul's calling as king of all Israel is in 1 Samuel 9. Saul's anointing as king of all Israel is in 1 Samuel 10. Saul's confirmation as king of all Israel is in 1 Samue 11:12-15. God rejecting King Saul is in 1 Samuel 13.

II. The People of Jerusalem (9:1-34)

>2. Why were the people of Judah taken into captivity in Babylon? (1-2) What did it mean to Israel to be unfaithful to the Lord? (Lev. 22:31, Deut. 5:28-33, Deut. 27-28) Why was it important for the returning Jews?

* "All Israel was listed in the genealogies recorded in the book of the kings of Israel. The people of Judah were taken captive to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness. 2 Now the first to resettle on their own property in their own towns were some Israelites, priests, Levites and temple servants."
